30 Day Song Challenge
Day 11: A Song By Your Favourite Band
For the eleventh entry in the ‘30 Day Song Challenge’ I am instructed to list "a song from your favourite band". That’s not as easy as it sounds; the very first entry in this journey of musical self discovery featured the song ‘The Same Deep Water As You‘ by The Cure (my favourite song by my favourite band) so it felt like this was ground that had already been covered. I did think that I’d ignore the rules and post up my current favourite song instead but Lady AudioJustice branded that idea "a total copout". So, despite the arduous task of trying to come up with a convincing enough rationale that explained why I had picked one fabulous Cure song over all the other fabulous Cure songs, I present to you ‘Burn’ by The Cure.
‘Burn’ was released in 1994 and was the lead song featured on the soundtrack album for the movie ‘The Crow‘ starring actor Brandon Lee (son of martial arts legend Bruce). Originally a comic book released in the late 1980s, the story revolves around a man named Eric and his fiancĂ©e Shelly who are the victims of a brutal attack by a gang of thugs. Eric is shot by the gang while Shelly is beaten and raped. The pair are left for dead. A year later, a crow visits Eric’s headstone and he is awakened from death. Guided by the crow, Eric hunts down the gang members in a bid to avenge his and Shelly’s murders.

‘The Crow’ is in Empire magazine’s list of the 500 greatest movies of all time; it ranked at number 468
Sadly, while filming the movie’s final scenes, Brandon Lee was killed when a dummy bullet was fired from one of the prop guns on set. Despite this, the film was eventually completed and went on to become a huge box office success.
During The Cure’s 30+ year career, they have provided surprisingly few original songs for movie soundtracks. ‘Burn’ was one of the few exceptions to the rule; head honcho Robert Smith was a fan of ‘The Crow’ comic book and so jumped at the chance to provide the title song for the film. The resulting song gained masses of radio play and the soundtrack album shot to the number one spot.
I remember that following the song’s release even people who weren’t fans of The Cure were raving about ‘Burn’. It would be ten years before it was available as part of The Cure’s rarities and b-sides collection ‘Join The Dots’, but during this time it still went on to become a firm fan favourite. Anyway, there’s no need to take my word for it… have a listen yourself!
‘The Crow’ soundtrack album also features some other great songs from bands such as Rage Against The Machine, Nine Inch Nails and Rollins Band. You can download ‘Burn’, or the whole album, from iTunes by clicking here.
Next up is Day 12 of the 30 Day Song Challenge; "a song from a band you hate"! Hahaha! Where to begin?! Hahaha!

Well… um… as 'Burn' was available on the 'The Crow' OST album all the time, the song appearing on JTD as well wasn't anything special, really.
Capricorn; yes, the song has been available on 'The Crow' OST since it's original release, however, iirc it was only when 'Join The Dots' was launched that 'Burn' became available on one of The Cure's own releases.
Frederik; thanks for posting the link! Yes, it would be good to hear the song live. I've seen The Cure about fourteen times over the years and haven't heard it at any show I've been to… yet!
